COVID19 has exacerbated gender inequalities in society. Our project looks at this reality in the academic context considering the gender segregation dynamics that already exist and the new challenges that have arisen due to the pandemic.

Goals

To analyze the consequences of the pandemic on gender inequalities in academia, particularly in Portugal, considering its immediate and long-term effects and to promote recommendations for measures and policies to mitigate its impact on academic women’s career.

Construction of the theoretical framework

Review of the state-of-the-art on gender inequalities in the labor market, in academia and in family-work balance, especially in the Portuguese context.

Survey

Assessment of the impact of the pandemic on the productivity of women and men during the pandemic considering indicators of professional activities and domestic work.

In-depth interviews

Qualitative analysis of the experience of family-work balance and productivity levels of academic women during the pandemic and their expectations for the career in the post-pandemic.

Focus group

Comparative study between women and men on their strategies for dealing with the demands of work and family during the pandemic.

Recommendations

Proposing recommendations for policies and programs for the promotion of gender equality in academia regarding the pandemic context and presentation of good practices in Portugal and other countries.

Disseminação dos resultados

Presentation of the project's outputs to the community in general, publication of articles and preparation of policy briefing.
